Happy New Year everyone! It’s inevitable that you’ll make some goals and resolutions to be healthier, happier and fitter this new year as most people do, and I will too! It’s easy to keep these goals 2 weeks in or even a month into the calendar year but what happens when life starts to get busy and we get burned out?

You pull up this how to keep your 2015 fitness goals is what you do! In this post I want to share with you some of my personal ways that I try to stay on track with my fitness routine and workout goals as well as some tips I picked up from others!

1. Write it down!

How ever you organize your life whether its on a notepad at work, or in your icalendar or an oldschool planner (hey melissa!) mark your weekly workout in your calendar. I’ve found that if you plan ahead and are realistic with what workouts you can make you have a better chance of actually finding yourself in the gym. Think of this as your “you” time and don’t compromise it if you don’t feel like it! Plus, writing it down subconsciously commits you to yourself, so help yourself out and write it down.

2. Pack a bag the night before!

This is a personal tip of mine. I try to pack so much into a day and night that I’m exhausted at the end of the day, and I’ve discovered that when I don’t pack my workout bag the night before (regardless of whether its a morning or evening workout), I won’t pack it in the morning or if I do, I forget something! Before you know it I’ve got at least three excuses why I can’t go to the gym the next day! This is a crucial trick for me, and if your like me, hate getting out of bed in the morning, you probably wont pack the bag in the morning either. Do yourself a favor, no matter how tired you are, pack the bag the night before your sleepy self will thank you on the way out the door tomorrow morning.

3. Get a workout buddy!

Everything is more fun when you have someone to share it with, whether that be a shopping excursion, an amazing bowl of spaghetti or a brutal ass-kicking workout. When you THINK your donzo and can’t do another lunge, your buddy is there to cheer you on and you the same for them! Workout buddies are great because they also keep you accountable for keeping your workout plans; I know I have a prideful streak in me and I personally hate cancelling a workout meet up with Melissa. I know what your thinking, none of my friends go to the same gym as me. NONE SENSE! Working out isn’t about going to a gym all the time. Find a park with a running trail, a jungle gym in a local play ground or a fun activity like free yoga at Whole Foods for you and your girls to go together. Workout buddies make a workout so much less brutal and keep you motivated to come back next time, because guess what they’re just as sore as you.

4. Give yourself a cheat day!

Don’t be so hard on yourself. When you’re working really hard to achieve your fitness goals, its possible (and human) to need a break! It’s important for you body to get the rest it needs and also for you to stave off getting burnt out. So give yourself one cheat day a week! This day isn’t a “I’ll reschedule later” day, its a “I’m super tired, I need to sleep so I’ll do that instead of work out” day. The challenge here is making sure you don’t abuse this cheat day! It can be tempting, but resist the urge. The cheat day is for you to recharge and re-amp to come back better, quicker, faster and more enthusiastic than you were the other day at the gym. If you’re using the cheat day because your dreading going to the gym in general… you need to see our last tip!

5. Mix it up, regularly!

It’s human nature to get bored, and it can happen with your workouts too! For the first month everything is chugging along and then you realize, your bored with your workouts and they’re not exciting, different or (gasp) challenging to you anymore. This is a crucial indication that you need to try something new! All those fun classes you see going on at the gym? Join one! Or  you can join a running club in your community, trying rowing on a nearby river/lake or give a new training methodology a chance like CrossFit. Last year I joined a co-ed softball team and found out I’m not a great softball player (although I am still superbly confident that I’m an all around great athlete, just not with a bat)! Better yet, you can try one of the 2015 workout trends that Melissa and I are dying to sign up for! Remember this is a chance for you to get exactly what you want out of your fitness in 2015; it wont be easy, but it should be fun, or at least not complete torture 100% of the time!
